I was sick yesterday and decided to try out Rookie’s Glitter Shoe DIY project. I used everything suggested: glossy Mod Podge, glitter (pink), tape, paintbrush, and disposable plastic container.
I mixed the Mod Podge and glitter to be about half and half:
Here’s my first coat still wet:
At first I was like “what? this looks like shit.” And yeah, it will look weird and cloudy at first, but just wait for it to dry and it’ll all be okay.
As you can see I did kind of a patchy job, which prompted some clumping when adding more layers…so I’d suggest long, smooth brush strokes.
Here’s after the first coat has dried:
I think I did 6 layers, I forget, but as suggested by Rookie it’s important to wait about an hour in between coats. You’r probably like “eff that” but really, do it. I got tons of stuff done during the in between periods; cleaned my room, sorted out clothes to give away, bleached the ends of my hair, went to the doctor to get my sinus infection checked out, and watched some good tv.
The toes are 6 layers and the sides and straps are one, all with a final clear coat on top.
Two things I would watch out for is removing the tape and the flexibility of the shoe. When I pulled the tape off some of the Mod Podge was stuck to it so the edges peeled a little. I added a second clear coat around the edges but ended up having to put some stronger glue under the peeling parts to keep them down. So maybe try painting without the tape…? Also the shoes I picked are a bit flexible and I can already see a few cracks in the Mod Podge after wearing them for a day. I’d suggest doing this on stiff shoes, or just doing sections of the shoe that won’t bend a lot.
But yeah, this was easy and fun and turned out really awesome!
